Slip/Trip Reactive Balance Training Program

Reactive balance training (RBT) is a type of balance training where clients repeatedly experience balance perturbations, and execute balance reactions to prevent a fall.

This slip-trip training allows for individuals to be able to practice this stepping response in a safe and controlled environment, while simulating the loss of balance event.

At Rogue, we implement a specific protocol to maximize this intensive balance training program with specific equipment to ensure the safety of our clients.

• Supported by research

This balance training is supported by research evidence, where in one study it demonstrated that participants experienced a significant reduction of falls for 12 months following a single session of training.

• Helps avoid fallS

Other studies show that a similar style of training involving perturbations or reactive stepping can also be effective at providing the necessary neuromuscular skills to be able to avoid falls.

• Improves ability to react to change in balance

Most of the studies mentioned above were conducted with older adults, but these same concepts can be applied to people with neurologic conditions. Specific research demonstrates that people with Parkinson’s Disease can significantly benefit from this type of training to improve their ability to react to changes in balance

“With a single session of

repeated-slip exposure, training cut older adults the annual risk of falls by 50%!

“The ability to rapidly acquire

fall-resisting skills on repeated-slip exposure remains largely intact at older ages and across functional activities!”

“A majority of PD participants improved their postural responses with practice, as revealed by reduced center of mass displacements.”

What to Expect?

At Rogue, we implement a specific protocol to maximize this intensive balance training program with specific equipment to ensure the safety of our members. We have experienced therapists familiar with performing this reactive balance training that will guide you through the process. Ideally, no more than 10 minutes of total training time is needed on the training platform due to the high-volume of slip/trips that occur within each round. However, if it is not appropriate to conduct reactive balance training on the platform, we can perform reactive balance training without using the platform. Below you should be able to see some videos of members at Rogue performing the training and some of their responses from the training.

Here are some examples of our members doing the training!

FAQ:

Will I need more than 1 session?

It depends. If you felt good doing one session and were able to perform well with appropriate stepping responses. You may just require some tune-up sessions in 6-12 months. However, if you or we feel that you could benefit from additional training sessions to continue to improve your reactive balance, we can definitely schedule subsequent sessions.

Does insurance cover this type of service?

This type of training can be found at other physical therapy clinics and may be offered if available within your therapy plan of care, if appropriate. In that case it will be covered by insurance. However, here at Rogue we can offer this unique reactive balance training as a stand-alone service and in that case it is not covered by insurance. If you are currently completing therapy elsewhere, this can be a great addition to your comprehensive care.

Are there any risks for this type of balance training?

While our safety harness does an excellent job at preventing falls, there are other potential risks. We may not recommend this type of training for individuals with a healing fracture, significant joint injury, or other active injuries. It would also be important to inform us if you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia. We can assess if this type of balance training may be appropriate for you through a screening process that we conduct.

Does this training cause pain?

This type of training should not cause pain, however you are using muscles in potentially new and different ways, and therefor muscle soreness is possible. Due to the nature of training reactive balance, the sudden steps and feelings of losing balance may make people feel uncomfortable. Our screening process allows us to gauge what type of reactive balance training may be appropriate based on current health status and past medical history. Although most participants who have performed the reactive balance training have been able to complete the training, it is important to know that all participants have the opportunity to terminate the session at any time.

Would there be a reason I would not be able to perform this type of training?

Although this is a great type of balance training, it is not for everyone. This would not be an appropriate training for persons with actively healing fractures, significant joint pain, other active injuries that may limit ability to stand or walk.

Is this only helpful for people with Parkinson’s Disease?

Absolutely not! This type of training is good for anyone who is looking to improve their balance and ability to react to a loss of balance. The majority of the research has been conducted in older adults without any specific diagnosis.

Do I have to be a member at Rogue to participate in this training?

You do not have to be a member of Rogue to participate in this training. However, you will need to fill out paperwork such as liability form and be screened prior to beginning the reactive balance training.

What can I expect after we get done with our training?

You will receive a post-training summary and recommendations from our therapists following the training.

Although it is normal for participants to feel some muscle soreness after a reactive balance training session, please let us know if you have significant discomfort following your training.

If you are interested in signing up and want to be inoculated against falls, please contact us to schedule your session now!
